Wikis: getting beyond the hype

what comes to mind when I hear "wiki"?
  • quick website
  • collaboration
  • great educational tool
  • online learning
  • easy to upload
  • easy to get help
Challenges
  • low comfort level w/tech
  • truncated participation
  • assessment..how do we grade the use of wikis or blogs?
3 Components
  • engagement...Kearsley and Shneiderman tell us:
    • create unique learning lessons
    • donate to the class for the sake of the class
    • relate to authentic task and projects that relate to them
    • have students think as explorers and turn to their peers for information
Engagement Strategies
  • Social presence: each student creates their own personal wiki page and use an avatar
  • Social presence: student interviews minimum of two other students and post summary on their personal wiki page that links to the personal pages of the other two students
  • Authentic task:wiki tutorial video : best video via rubric will be used..get small groups to make a tutorial for others
  • Authentic task:small groups develop a Statement on Social Media....how to effectively integrate social media into learning

How can we get students to question one another for cognitive?
Knowledge advancement as a community rather than individual achievement
Knowledge of as opposed to knowledge about
Use wikis to help students debate and promote deep learning...peer questioning
Cho, Lee and Jonassen look at how students look at facts vs. why do you think it is a fact?
  • have students query themselves
Evaluation of wiki participation
  • contents
  • who is contributing ..edits?
  • support
Students could have a link to each page on their wiki and take notes
